A few years ago, we built a house in Bossier City. We actually started building just 3 months into our marriage! Some might say yikes, but for us, it just worked out perfectly because we qualified for a special loan that allowed us to not have to put a ton of money down. It took 71 days to build! We seriously had the best experience. I know that doesn’t happen for everyone, but for us, everything turned out perfectly without hardly any issues, and who can complain about 71 days?!
Anyways, shortly after we moved in, I fell in love with decorating. Like, FELL IN LOVE with decorating. One of the very first rooms I decorated was our guest bedroom. I really wanted to create something serene, calming and homey. That way, any of our visitors wouldn’t mind staying the room while they were away from their own home.
I didn’t have a blog then, but I uploaded a picture onto Pinterest, and it has really taken off from there. It’s been repinned over and over and over again! In fact, it’s one of my most popular pins to date, so I thought I would share a better look of the room and decor.
The walls are painted Anonymous by Behr, which is a really nice gray color. It’s not too dark and also not too light for the room (which was actually a bit small). The bedding is of an ivory color, and who doesn’t love ruffles?! I love this bedding!!
Excuse the wrinkles. 😉 That burlap pillow in the middle of the bed? My mom sewed that for me. I just wanted something really simple to tie in the backdrop, and she added a little string of faux pearls, and that was the perfect touch.
Speaking of the backdrop… I wanted to create a backdrop above the bed, even though there was actually a headboard. I wanted the backdrop to be the focal point of the room, so I ordered a bunch of ribbon, lace and tulle and got to work tying knot after knot on a long string of twine. I’m not going to lie, that backdrop took hours!! It turned out just as I had hoped, but it was definitely a lot of work!
I created the little pink knobs (similar here) by putting them on some gold painted wood I picked up from Hobby Lobby. I wanted a way to tie it to the wall, and thought the knobs were a unique idea.
That mirror was my grandmother’s, so I loved that I was able to use it in the room.
I purchased the lamps (similar here) from Hobby Lobby, and then added a little row of rosettes at the top and bottom of the burlap shade.
The burlap curtains you see in the photo are from Target, and they are extremely thick! They aren’t lined, but they might as well be considered lined because the material is so heavy.
You can see a little closer look of the ribbon backdrop. Lots of lace, burlap, ribbon and tulle!
This clock is still one of my favorites. I’m not sure why, but just something about the key is cute and not something you see all of the time.
On the other side of the room was a desk and chair with a tv and DVD player for the guests to use if they so desired. That desk is quite old and came from Walmart, but it works just fine.
This is probably my first room that I ever truly set out the decorate, and I really loved it. I thought it was cozy and peaceful. Although my decorating style has evolved quite a bit these days, I still love this room, and it still holds a special place in my heart. One of our guest rooms in our current home looks very similar to this one still, but I do want to add a little more pizzazz to it soon, so it fits the rest of our home.
I love when things turn into great memories. Do you remember the first room you ever really decorated? Share your link in the comments!
I have stayed in this room!!! It’s just as beautiful in person as it is in the photos 🙂 I wish I could catch your decorating bug!
Thanks, Connie! Glad you enjoyed the room. One day maybe when you’re settled in the condo, you’ll want to decorate it more! 🙂
I hope so! I’m so ready for that!
I’ve falling in love w/the comforter, it’s very simple yet it’s elegant! I’ve been looking for something like this, where would I be able to purchase it?
Hi there! I’m not sure if this exact one is sold anymore, but the brand is Lush Decor. Here’s a similar one: https://www.wayfair.com/bed-bath/pdp/rosemonde-5-piece-comforter-set-ljd3390.html
