When we were in Italy, I quickly learned that pizza would be my go to when I didn’t know what to order at a restaurant (aka couldn’t read the menus). I mostly relied on salami pizzas to get me through any meal some days. I’m pretty picky when it comes to food though. Basically, I eat like a 12 year old, but I try to count calories often, so my waistline doesn’t keep expanding. Sounds fun, right?!
This year, I’m trying to do better and learn to like a few more foods, particularly the healthy ones. Like my mother always says, “Just try a few bites each time and eventually you’ll learn to like new stuff.” I’m still working on believing her about that 😉 but it’s never to late to try to learn to eat healthier and smarter.
I love pizza, but when you’re counting calories or trying to keep your weight down (oh the struggle!!), that’s probably not something you should eat. However, I have figured out the perfect way to have a little pizza (so you don’t lose your mind) and not make you gain a whole bunch of weight from it! Sounds amazing, amiright?!
Have you heard of pita pizzas? They’re basically pizzas made out of pita bread! HELLO, AWESOMENESS!!! I’ve seen the cauliflower crust pizzas, but that seems like a whole lot of work and it doesn’t really sound that yummy to me either. So, when I saw a pita bread pizza on Pinterest, I thought I would give it a shot and try it out. I knew beforehand that it would not taste like a regular pizza, but if I could make a lower calorie one, then I could enjoy it without the side of guilt. 😉

Don’t judge my pizza photo too much! I’m not a food photographer… yet! 🙂
Well, I’m here to tell you that that pita pizza I made for lunch today was so good! It was the perfect size to curb my hunger, and I could actually enjoy it knowing I was only eating 325 calories for lunch! Whoop! Whoop! That’s a huge win in my book.
There’s so many ways to change it up and make it even healthier. Add veggies, use different/healthier cheese, make your own marinara sauce, use wheat pita bread, etc. So without further ado, here’s my very first recipe on my blog!
- 1 pita bread
- ½ cup marinara sauce
- ¼ cup mozzarella cheese
- 3 large salami
- Preheat over to 350.
- Place a sheet of aluminum foil on a cookie sheet.
- Lightly spray the sheet with cooking spray.
- Spread marinara sauce all over the pita bread.
- Add mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce.
- Top with salami (or any other ingredients you wish to add)
- Place your pizza on the cookie sheet and insert into the over for 8-10 minutes.
- Serve immediately. Enjoy!
These are the ingredients I used for my first pita pizza. I bought these on a whim, so there wasn’t much time to look for healthier options at another grocery store. Next time, I might try to make it even healthier, but it was good for my first one if I say so myself!
Have you ever tried a pita pizza? If not, you should totally make one for lunch or dinner. I was highly impressed at how delicious just a little salami one turned out. I can’t wait to try other things on the pizza. YAY for a new easy dinner meal!!
